Lana has a wonderful insight into the thoughts and feelings of the characters giving life to each one; with no two characters being the same. The family love, loyalty and devotion to each other and their faith shows all through the book. This book is full of true to life situations that will relate to any reader. The author has woven a love story/stories, tragedy and historical insight into her story keeping me spell bound. All without a predictable ending! Lana Givens has successfully delivered the heartfelt story of a young woman's journey in faith and trust in God. Interwoven with historical details, with an especially detailed view of the American Civil War's effect on the homefront, Givens holds the reader's attention to the very end. I am looking forward to the sequel, and hope it comes very soon!
This is the first in the series by K Lana Givens of the Graham family and it started an obsession for me for her books in this series. I am an avid reader of books in this genre which is Faith-based, family and continued characters from one book to the other and also true based historical places and facts. She has done an excellent job of writing in this book. Read it almost immediately and couldn't wait for next in series. Good job, Lana!!

I enjoyed this story from the minute I started reading it....Lana Givens certainly knows how to bring her characters to life!! I would think about Barbary while doing my chores around the house....Then would have to just let the work go and get back to my book...It wasn't just the lives of the people that held my interest, and made me feel I knew them, but it was so well researched that the time and place came alive also. It is a sometimes bittersweet story of strong faith in God, devoted family, and some unexpected twists and turns...Sort of like real life I guess....
I appreciated the extreme hardships of the 1850's as author Lana Givens brings the characters to life in their dependence on each other for survival and their dependence and gratefulness to God. Lana has done incredible research to put the reader back in time through this precarious journey.
